What is Black Fox doing to help with test scores?

Everyday, the teachers at Black Fox Elementary go above and beyond to educate each and every child that walks into the building. However, we have also adopted and begun programs to help each child work to his/her fullest potential. Below is a list of some of the ways Black Fox teachers work to make sure the students are successful.

Balanced Literacy- A recently adopted program used for instruction in K-6 to help teach to appropriate levels of each student.

Compass Learning- This is an excellent tool for the teachers to use to help give the students extra practice on skills taught in the classroom.

ESP Enrichment Classes- These classes include Science, weaving, photography, scrapbooking, dance, sports, art, etc. The enrichment classes are a way for the students to explore different mediums and therefore, use their thinking skills in a new way.

Homework Help- Certified teachers stay after school every day, except Friday, and work with ages 1-6 on homework to make sure the students understand daily concepts taught in the classroom.

MTSU- Tutors, Practicum Students, Student Teachers

Reading Recovery- A program for 1st graders to help develop reading skills.

Think Link- 3-6 graders take an assessment 3 times a year. The test is then graded and the reports show which state standards we as teachers need to focus on throughout the year. The teachers are also able to go onto the Think Link website and create assessments to see if the students truly understand each subskill.

Title I- A program for K-2 to help develop reading skills and extend classroom instruction.

Tutoring- Certified teachers stay after school and conduct tutoring classes in Math, Reading, and Writing, to help further the students understanding of the individual skills.

Words Their Way- This new program focuses on teaching Spelling on each student's level.

Black Fox is dedicated to helping each child learn to the best of his/her ability. We are grateful for such a wonderful group of students to work with everyday!

Community Involvement

Black Fox is fortunate to have a community that is heavily involved with the school each and every day. We have several organizations that take time to focus on our students. We also have our own community outreach programs that the students can participate in during school hours.

THE COMMUNITY CARES FOR BLACK FOX

Howard and Sally Wall- Howard and Sally Wall have supported Black Fox for over 10 years and have done anything and everything to help Black Fox to be successful.

D.A.R.E.- The Murfreesboro City Police Department has a wonderful program that focuses on helping children learn how to make positive choices. They instruct grades K-6 and act as a resource to the students and the teachers.

Big Brothers, Big Sisters- Through cooperation with local high schools, the Big Brothers, Big Sisters program offers mentors for students throughout the school. The program helps the students to have a positive role model that they can look up to and count on for advice. In addition, the Big Brothers, Big Sisters have the choice of continuing their friendship/mentoring relationship through middle school and beyond.

MTSU- We are partnered with the MTSU Blue Raider Football Team. The football players come in and mentor, read, and volunteer their time with the students. They also give their time to help with different school-wide fundraiser.

BLACK FOX CARES FOR THE COMMUNITY

Coins for Cancer- The school collects money to donate to local cancer research.

Soldier Care Boxes- The students bring in items that are put into care packages and sent to soldiers overseas. They also write letters to the soldiers for a letter writing campaign.

Family Resource Center- Periodically, we collect items that are sent to the Rutherford County Family Resource Center. The collected items then go to local families to help them through difficult times.

Performances- Each year, the second grade puts together a holiday performance and travels to local nursing homes and care centers.

Recycling- Every class has a recycling center in their room designated for paper. The sixth grade students then collect the paper and put it into bins for a recycling company. We also collect aluminum cans to recycle.
